A lot of time has passed and this is a story of some of the things that happened during that time.
So the new wheels are great and I don?t feel like I have to constantly be checking the rear and front rims for weak spots and kinks. So nice that I stopped looking in front of me and crashed into Perry. We were looking for a place to camp because it was getting dark. I didn?t see that he had stopped and was looking for a clearing. I bent the forks back about 8 inches sooooo, we bent them back. We had found our camp spot for the night. Perry pulled the forks forward while I held the frame and we managed to make it work. We moved to the clearing and all slept under the stars.
The next day we road for an hour or two and found a city to stop at and get a new fork, or so we thought. It was another village that was having a huge celebration for something. We found some nice people that let us stay in their yard. They asked if somebody posted the house on a website or something because we were the 4th group of people to wonder about the place and ask to stay. We cooked food at the house and they walked us to a natural hot spring that was turned into a free public bath house. After that, Perry and I walked to the festival, drove bumper cars, and drank crappy watery ice beer. The Next day I looked for a new fork or frame but found nothing except a new clamp for the derailer that I messed up in the collision, and some new cables for the brakes and shifters. We set out for the next city or village after a couple hours. About 40 or 50 kl later we found a place that had new fork for 100 pesos. We looked for another place and found a couple of guys probably about 19 and 20 who fixed bikes. They seemed nice and not out to rip us off. 1 guy went and picked up the first fork we saw and the other guy started working on my bike. He replaced the headset bearings and put the fork on for 150. It was pretty fun hanging out and drinking beer with them while he was fixing the bike.
There really isn?t much left to replace on the bike now.
So we get to San Cristobal De Las Casas, hang there for a couple of nights and head into the Highlands to Oventic.
Easier said than done. This was an insanely long hill to start. what seemed like at least 45 minutes later, we stopped to take a break at the top of the hill. Little did I know it was only the beginning. The rest of the ride just seemed to drag on and on up steep hills and sharp turns. I totally ate shit going down a hill and around a turn, but only lost a few inches of skin from my forearm. Ariel helped me bandage it up after catching her breath from all the laughter. We continued on and finally caught up with Perry. He had been waiting for an hour. We Passed San Andres and Found Oventic. We actually walked into the gated community rather easily without being approached by the zapatista vigilantes, later to find out that we just had to wait for the Junta to finish a meeting and authorize our classes. We then found out that some students were staying from the previous week and more new students arrived the next day(monday) and were met by the vigilantes. Those students were tied up, detained and hung over a huge boiling pot of water, yes, they were to be eaten. Not really, but they were met by the vigilantes and needed papers and stuff. The first week of school was awesome and disappointing. I feel like I learned a lot about their struggle and got a lot of much needed spanish review and folk song learning. Great! Everyone in Mexico, including indigenous people think that I?m a hippie folk singin?rasta.
After the first week, I had to return to San Cris. to exchange money because it?s harder for them to change it due to racism. That is when I found out that the ride to San Cris from Oventic is actually harder and seemed more up hill and steeper, except for the last long downhill into the city.
I changed money, checked e-mail, ate lots of food and set out to return to Oventic.
It started to get dark but I velcro?d a light to my handle bars and continued on slowly around dark tight turns. I finally arrived back to the caracol.
The next week seemed almost pointless for me.
I had been challenged to try and focus on language taught by teachers that didn?t seem to mind burning plastic and blaming the bad capitalists for it. I still don?t understand why they think it?s ok. They didn?t seem to care about reusing anything to reduce their cost of building materials or any sustainable living. They seem to think that what they burn is little enough to not make a difference. The other students didn?t seem to mind either and seemed rather annoyed that Perry and I brought it up for discussion. I talked to some of the Promotores about uses for trash and my experiences with dumpster diving in Estados Unidos. I also talked to them about finding alternatives for water purification instead of buying Ciel(coke product). Everything thing I talked about seems to make sense, it reduces the cost and the need for a corporation to deliver water in plastic bottles, hopefully they will take into concideration when they are continuing thier struggle against the mal gobierno and pinche capitalists, but I kind of doubt it.
We started learning a skit to perform during a celebration of Zapata. The skit was a lot of fun but I didn?t really want to be in it. The celebration was a lot of fun and we didn?t really have much class that week because the caracol was preparing for the party. Friday class after the party was pretty easy and I actually feel like I benefitted a lot at the end of the week.
We left on sat. and rode back to San Cris. Sunday we rode on Critical Mass. It was a lot of fun. About 45 people. 2 homeade bamboo bikes and lots of smiling faces.
Perry and I stayed here, Ariel went back to Oventic, and Gina is on her way to Tuxtla.
We will meet her at the airport on the 19th and head towards Oventic so we can all meet up and figure out where we want to go from there. I?m really excited to see Gina and put the bike together.
Oventic was great but I need to practice what I learned before cramming more in my brain, and one more long trip on my bike that is almost completely rebuilt now.
We will check out a eco college on the way to meet with Gina and who knows what else
