Mexico City to Puebla to San salvador HUIXColotla,
Mexico city was fun.The Pyramids were great to see. We stayed at Ivan?s apt. He and his brother Louis are totally awesome. They let us crash on their couches, mattresses and floors. Hooked us up with everything we needed and partiet till the we hours of the morning with us. We went to a huge punk market that happens every week. A few hours later we went to Salsa lessons and then to go watch Polka Madre. They are tons of fun polka circus punk. It was totally awesome. I Bought a used bike for 350 pesos from a guy who works at a taqueria down the street from Ivans apt. We slapped some new tires and 1 new tube. It?s just a 10 speed but it seemed great for the price. So after the wheels were trued we picked up a wide rear rack, new pair of brake shoes and put some bar tape on it. Perry got a huge red plastic crate and 2 side milk crates. It was way to much so we dropped the side baskets and kept the huge back basket. The only down fall is that all the weight is a little high and all in the back but pretty decent for only having spent less than 70 bucks on a touring bike.
So We took a bus out of the city to Pueble so we wouldnt have to fight traffic with our bikes fully loaded. This is where the fun starts. I Get sick a few days before we leave, I?m stil sick but whatever, it?s bound to happen sometime. Perry was sick before me and Ariel is sick now, same symtoms, same crappy feeling. Puking and crappy brick in my stomach feeling. So finally we arrive in Puebla, find our way to the main road and away we go. Into the city center. It was nice we took some pictures and cycled further down cobbleston streets. I don?t know how my bike was holding up. I probably have about 75 or 80 pounds swaying back and forth. I?ve already taken off one side mirror. Some stranger tried to get me to pay for it but it snapped right back on good as it was before and off we go again.
As we decended more hills out ouf the city we pass a huge geodesic dome in the middle of a park. After we ride farther we finally leave the busy streets and things quiet down. It didn?t seem to hard to ride the bike despite feeling like shit. Then we start getting to some hills. Not so fun anymore. Outside of Puebla we pass through a village and find a dirt road to a lake, so we think. About 3 meters down the road, my tire blows out.
Some nice people gave me a ride to a car tire shop. Some guy across the street is yelling hello so I go say hi. I was suprised to hear any English being spoken. It was chopping but pretty good. My Spanish is horrible so there is a nice little language barrier for Perry and I to work around or through. So this guy introduces himself as Manuel and his family and friends who are there are all cool and happy to have more company. He offers a beer water, food, anything and was totally nice. We talked for 25 minutes or so and he sends me in the direction I need for the tube. I stop by on my way back and we talk a bit more and he tells me if I need anything to stop by his house with the yellow van in front. I meet up with Perry and Ariel and its to late for the lake. It is supposedly gross and super grasscovered anyway.
So we fix the tube, go to get food and find that Manuel had tried to follow me after I left but failed and got lost. He returned and invited us to his house for food and place to sleep. It was great. We left the next day. The Next day I was still sick but the first day didn?t seem to bad despite the flat, so I figured this would be about the same. I was wrong.
The ride started with us going the wrong way up steap hills then we turned around and got going the right way. This day we covered about 60 Km. It was very up steap hilly and hot.I was always behind and had quite a struggle with all the weight and was finding it harder and harder to steer as there is little weight on the front tire. We stoped about twice before I was pushing my bike up hills. Some nice kids passed me and pulled over. Ariel and Perry had just passed the top of a hill and rounded a curve and werefar ahead. The Guys offered some Pulque, and natural cigarretes. I don?t usually smoke cigarettes but this one happened to be filled with mota instead of tobaco, so I was in luck. The Pulque is a skim milky white liquere drink with the consistancy of spit, which is what I hear they use to help the fermenting process. Pretty tasty for spit but It tasted good but like I would be dehydrated if I drank more than a mouthful so I stopped at that thanked them for stopping. I made it to the top of the hill and coasted down and caught up with Perry and Ariel. We got food but I could barely eat. I was beat. We found nearby farmland, got permission and camped.
