Crossing the Border
I am now, for the first time since August 2004, in the United States. I'd been nervous about going, especially about the border crossing. It was an interesting experience.
So, I left from Munich airport at 11:55 central european time. 13+ hours later we finally arrived at O'Hare airport. The flight was just as I expected, tiring and sleepless. I did finally get to watch the new James Bond film though, and it wasn't so bad. Also the food wasn't all that bad. Not great, but not that bad. But it's always strange when you are a vegetarian on a plane because they bring you your food 15 minutes before the guy sitting next to you gets his.
Anyhow, when I got to the passport control, I had in my hand a copy of 1984 with the words "Thoughtcrime", "Reality Control = Doublethink", and "Facecrime" written on the cover. Also in my hand (bexause I couldn't figure out how to pin it to my shirt) the border inspection paper with the seal of the US Department of Homeland Security emblem on it that I got with the mail I received recently. The first border guard noticed the sticker right away and asked me where I got it. I told him it was on my mail. Then he asked me how long I was in Europe. Then he wrote some codes on my customs form and sent me along to the second border guard that I had to talk to. Most people didn't have to go to another border guard, but I ended up talking with three.
The last one asked me what I was doing in europe, I said traveling. She asked if I worked, and I just said no. Then she asked how long I'll be here, and that's where I slipped. I meant to be prepared to tell them that it's none of their business, but I told them it'll be 3 weeks. Then she asked how long I plan to stay out of the county and I told her that until at least January 2009 and Bush is no longer president. I don't know if they noticed the book, but I think that they must have.
So, now I'm in the US. Woah, it's weird. I'll write about the things I do here later, but my first impressions were quite strange. Especially since I'm used to be in an area where most people are not speaking english, and now here I am surrounded by a million conversations that I can understand. It's no longer just background noise that I can easily turn off.
My plans while I am here are all up in the air. For sure I'll be going to Urbana for a few days. Also, I'm going to go camping with a few friends. Also, there is the wedding, visiting friends and family in Chicago, and going to concerts.
Being away from europe for 3 weeks is going to be strange, but I'm sure I'll survive. I'm looking around Chicago with new eyes and I hope I find more good than bad.
